A Heartfelt Memory at Vera and Marlene Home
Â
Arriving at Vera and Marlene’s Home was something special as the 19 girls who live there greeted us as friends. I am usually cautious when meeting new people for the first time, but the girls would allow none of that, as they were so keen to show us their world and let us share in their lives for an afternoon
Nyree received a warm welcome from the girls at our Homes
I was particularly interested to hear that several of the girls are undertaking university studies as this will be life changing in terms of the opportunities it gives them for work, financial independence and being able to contribute to their communities.
Their cheerful faces were ready to share their stories
As the girls introduced themselves, they also told us what they wanted to do in the future. I was amazed as four girls said they wanted to be doctors. I’m a doctor and love my profession. I know how hard you must work to get into medical school and to complete the program. It was special to spend some more time with these girls and find out more about their high school studies. I encouraged them to persevere with their studies, even the parts that are not so enjoyable (for me, this was physics!), as each part is a building block that helps prepare them for the next part of their studies.
Nyree had a wonderful time chatting with the girls
Minea told me about her chemistry studies. I had done a short talk with the girls, using a visual chemistry experiment to illustrate my main point. Minea took up the invitation to try the experiment herself and perfectly pulled it off. Minea is quiet, kind and thoughtful, all characteristics that will make her a wonderful physician one day.

I also spent time speaking with Ratha, another young woman aspiring to do medicine. She is already confident, intelligent, and capable and will be a leader among her peers, given the chance to achieve her potential.

?Knowing that these young women have had to overcome huge obstacles just to be able to continue their education in high school, I am so grateful that GIBTK gives them the opportunity to be supported while doing university studies. They are a beautiful, compassionate group of young women who will be wonderful role models for other young women as they mature and are all capable of making positive differences in their community. It was an honour to meet them and hear about their hopes for the future. I’ll be praying for them and cheering them on.
