As our two-week journey with Giving It Back To Kids comes to an end, it’s hard to put into words just how grateful we are. What started as a professional and cultural exchange quickly grew into something so much more – something personal, emotional and meaningful.
Stina and Malene had the opportunity to meet the kids at the HOMEs
During our stay, we had the opportunity to visit and engage with several of the organization’s homes: The Father’s house, Mary’s Home, Light House and Carmela’s Home. Each home is unique, each filled with its own spirit, but what connects them all is a deep, genuine sense of care and purpose for the kids, that runs through every wall, every routine and every person we met.
They engaged in meaningful and memorable activities
At the Father’s House, we were introduced to the quiet strength of single mothers caring for their babies. These girls are supported with such care and patience, and the environment is filled with warmth and love. We were truly moved by how the staff and house-moms not only assist with physical needs, but also empower these women emotionally, mentally and spiritually. It reminded us that family is not always about structure – it’s about connection
A wonderful time spent with the little angels
In Mary’s Home, we met 14 vibrant and brave girls under the age of 18. From the very first day, they welcomed us with open arms, big smiles, and so much curiosity. We played, we laughed, and we talked about everything from music, to dreams, school and future. Even though we come from different parts of the world, we quickly found common ground in kindness, creativity, curios and joy.Â
It was touching to meet the girls
Lighthouse, Carmela’s Home and Hal’s Home offered us a glimpse into the lives of older youth – both boys and girls, many of whom are preparing to step into adulthood. What struck us here was the level of responsibility and independence these young people are developing.
Interactive and bonding activities with the kids
We had many meaningful conversations about life, career goals, love and identity. These moments reminded us why we chose to study social workers: to support and guide young people in becoming who they want to be.
It was truly an amazing and unforgettable time
Across all the Homes, one thing stood out to us the most: the power of structure, love and belief in the potential of every child and young person. Giving It Back To Kids is not just providing place to live and grow – it is shaping futures. The approach we observed is not only holistic and warm – it is incredibly professional. The balance between freedom and guidance, between empathy and expectation, is something we admire deeply.
From a professional point of view, this experience has inspired us immensely. As social workers students, we’ve studied theory and worked in various settings – but here we saw a model that blends compassion, community and clear values in a way that creates impact. It’s something we will carry with us, both academically and personally.
Thank you, Giving It Back To Kids, for allowing us to be part of your world. Thank you for the trust, the warmth, and the inspiration. We are truly grateful – and we will never forget this experience.
With love,
Stina Moelsby and Malene Madsen
