What’s taken place in my heart…?

I’d like to share three special moments I had while visiting Cambodia and Vietnam with the GIBTK team.

The first was our visit to the girls home in Battambang, Cambodia. From the moment that our van pulled up in front of the girls home, I realized something special was about to happen and my heart was being broken open.

As we approached the home, the girls began to sing a welcome song of thanks to us. What a joyful sound they made! Their faces shone with love. I was overwhelmed and deeply touched by the love they showed us. Their stories broke my heart, yet I felt such thankfulness for this place of love, acceptance, and hope that the girls now have.

The second was our visit to the various projects at GIBTK in DaNang, Vietnam. I’ve been amazed at the work being done here and so impressed by the dedication of the staff as they care for the children and young adults. The children and young adults have purpose, they learn persistence and motivation, whilst living in a place of safety.  They were so eager to talk to us and share their hopes and dreams. Their stories continue to break me, inspire me, and go deep into my soul.

The third was our visit to The Father’s House in DaNang where single mothers are loved and cared for while they re-establish their lives. I was especially excited to meet the young woman I’d been writing to for the last two years. I spotted her, walked to her, and introduced myself - she was so surprised! That was a very special hug. Again, it was such a joy to spend a little time with her during the next few days. She and her young daughter are both precious and I’m so glad they also have a chance of a future now!

Finally, I’d like to add that I wondered what I could offer in coming here and what would be of value. I’m not a public speaker and I’m quite shy, but I learned again the importance of a smile, a hug and unconditional love – unconditional love that was not one sided, but that came from me to the children and from them to me. I’m still overwhelmed by what’s taken place in my own heart, but it’s something that I will carry with me always!
