Rooted in Hope

The Life of Sem Ratha

Sem Ratha is my name, and I am 24 years old. My birth family was very poor, consisting of eight people, and I am the firstborn. My parents, who grew up in a rural area, are farmers. As we didn't have a house, my family and I moved in with my grandma when I was six years old. My house was approximately 6 miles away from the school, and every day, I had to ride my old bike. Riding a bicycle was challenging due to the dust and the route passing through quiet rural areas, creating an opportunity for criminals. Consequently, I was extremely afraid when it started to rain, as I couldn't see the path, and the sky had grown gloomy. Despite these challenges, I didn't give up because of my desire to pursue my dream through education.

I spent a few years living with my grandmother until my family moved out, but I continued to live with her. I stayed with her until 2012, at which point I moved out and spent almost a year with my family. Around that time, a villager in my community told my family about GIBTK. My family really wanted me to attend a decent school, but they had no idea how to secure me a good education or an opportunity through GIBTK. During that moment, I was attending church once a week, and I was grateful that GIBTK had given me the opportunity to resume my studies.

Living in the pleasant and welcoming house of Marlene and Vera taught me many things. I developed into a responsible, mature adult who learned to love, respect, and value others. I also gained a deep understanding of my personality by learning valuable life skills, such as responsibility, respect, and self-awareness. Additionally, I received emotional support and counseling from the dorm leader. This place, in particular, helped me discover who I am and allowed me to develop into the person I am today. I know that my life has transformed now.

I have completed my university degree in Management, and these days, I work as a teacher in another province. I am grateful and thankful to GIBTK and all donors for supporting me from the beginning until now. Thank you for providing a warm and safe home. I love Giving It Back To Kids.
